High Temperature Hot Water (Above 110C)
Overview
The Above 110°C Hot Water Boiler Awareness is a 1 day course designed for operators, maintenance engineers and supervisors who work with pressurised hot water systems operating above 110°C (high temperature, low pressure closed circuits).
The course covers the specific thermodynamic behaviour and risks of hot water at elevated temperatures, water chemistry and treatment needs for closed circuits.
Who Should Attend?
- Experienced plant operators responsible for high temperature hot water systems
- Maintenance engineers and supervisors tasked with risk management of boiler houses and closed circuits
- Facilities and utilities managers who oversee compliance, water treatment or asset reliability programmes
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Understand legal duties and recognised competency frameworks
- Explain the behaviour of hot water above 110°C
- Identify water quality risks
- Recognise key boiler house components and controls
- Perform safe isolation and reinstatement
- Adopt practical operator checks and record keeping
The Law and Competency
- Overview of employer/operator duties, BG02/INDG guidance links to training expectations.
Thermodynamics and Plant Behaviour Above 110°C
- Pressure/temperature interactions, stored energy and risk profiles of elevated temperature hot water; implications for safe operation and emergency response.
Water Treatment, Monitoring and Failure Modes
- Closed circuit water chemistry fundamentals, common degradation mechanisms, simple operator tests and escalation routes to specialist treatment providers.
Equipment, Controls and Instrumentation
- Typical high temperature components and how to inspect/interrogate them for early warning signs.
Safe Isolation, Depressurisation and Reinstatement
- HSG253 safe isolation procedure for pressurised hot water circuits, venting and cooling considerations, correct reinstatement sequence and verification to avoid water hammer or thermal shock.
Practical Checks, Logs and Handover
- Daily/weekly checks, what to record, trending basics and effective handover practices to ensure continuity of safe operation and compliance.
Duration: 1 Day
