Low Temperature Hot Water (Below 110C)
Overview
The Below 110°C Hot Water Boiler Awareness is a 1-day basic course designed to give plant operators, maintenance teams and site staff a practical foundation in the safe operation and management of low pressure hot water boiler systems.
The course focuses on formation and behaviour of hot water under pressure, water quality and treatment risks, common failure modes, legal responsibilities and safe isolation procedures. This course draws on nationally recognised guidance for industrial hot water and boiler management.
Who Should Attend?
- Plant operators responsible for hot water systems
- Maintenance engineers and technicians working on low pressure hot water plant
- Site managers and supervisors with responsibility for boiler house safety and compliance
- New starters or staff transitioning from other thermal systems into hot water operation
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Understand legal and duty of care requirements
- Describe how hot water is generated and circulated
- Identify common causes of failure
- Recognise key boiler house components and controls
- Perform safe isolation and reinstatement
- Apply simple checks and record keeping
The Law – Why Do We Need to Be Trained?
- Overview of duties under current guidance for steam hot water plant; employer and operator responsibilities; consequences of noncompliance.
Introduction to Below 110°C Hot Water Systems
- How hot water is generated, circulated and returned, pressure, temperature and energy concepts.
Water Quality and Failure Modes
- Importance of water treatment for closed systems; common corrosion, scale and microbiological issues and their operational signs.
Safe isolation and Reinstatement
- HSG253 safe isolation principles for hot water circuits; lockout/tagout, depressurisation and venting where applicable.
- Correct reinstatement sequence and verification check to prevent water hammer and equipment damage.
Practical Checks and Record Keeping
- Daily, weekly and monthly operator checks that make a measurable difference to reliability; basic log keeping and handover points.
